To attract the crab an oily bait such as pilchards is placed in a bait holder like Crab’n Gear’s Bait Ezy or Bait Bag in the middle of the tray. When the Spanner crab walks, unusually in a forward and backward motion, across the tray the small spikes that are all over their shell quickly become entangled in the mesh holding them there until the tray is retrieved. It is amazing to see crabs pulled up from often 50 or more meters still hooked onto the thin mesh.
